Maya’s Pictures Show Her Real Beauty by Marsha Lindquist
I am almost oblivious to the goodness and beauty of my dog Maya. Fortunately, others are not. We walk downtown Prescott almost every day. Not a day goes by that at least three people either stop me on the street or as they pass by to tell me what a beautiful dog Maya is, or how well behaved she is (this excludes the times when she is practically ballistic when she sees another dog). Today, I really appreciated what others are seeing, and sometimes I have not.
Sometimes I don’t notice how others are looking at Maya. Maybe she knows it and prances so she gets noticed. Frankly, she IS a beautiful dog but I think I could be a little bit biased since she is my dog – so I don’t think about it much until I hear the compliments. I wish I could take credit for her beauty, but I didn’t give birth to her. Sometimes I say she looks most like her Mom! When I notice that others are beaming in on her I often take the opportunity to practice and reinforce her obedience skills (which we work on daily on our walks). That’s when she sits so pretty and even offers her paw when asked.
Today, I took it in. I realized that while she is not standard for her breed (German Shepherds who conform to the standard are not long hair), she is distinctive. Frankly, it’s her uniqueness that sets her apart from the rest. She is striking and sashays with her own style. She holds herself proudly and her long hair blows in the wind.
