Maya’s Hobbies
Maya loves many different sports and hobbies. The usual, tennis balls, are a big hit with her and she particularly loves a game we lovingly refer to as “footsyball”. That’s where we assemble 6-10 tennis balls in our pockets and, with the aid of a tennis racket, we hit balls down the hill about 400 yards away and encourage her to return the balls to our feet - only to run after another tennis ball.
She adors hiking particularly at altitude and loves the rocks and boulders we scramble over. Maya is not yet a certified pack dog, but she carries a backpack along with her own poop bags, compass, water, emergency kit, and treats. We often hike a mile or two every day and a longer hike of 4-5 miles on weekends.
Another favorite hobby of Maya’s is hauling big logs that she steals from the wood pile. She brings them up on the patio and loves to look over the hillside chewing on the end of a stick. The coyotes and birds are a big fascination for Maya and she has given up barking at the birds but the coyote really can give her a run along the fenceline. The deer in the area also challenge her ability to run up and down the fenceline.
Most recently, Maya has begun learning K9 Nose Work. Dogs have an amazing sense of smell and a natural desire to hunt. The sport of K9 Nose Work is designed to develop your dog’s natural scenting abilities by using their desire to hunt and their love of toys, food and exercise. It’s a great way for your dog to have fun, build confidence, and burn lots of mental and physical energy. For a look into this sport go to http://www.funnosework.com/ |
